The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has reported a rash of 11 livestock depredation reports between June 30 and Aug. 19 declaring the cause of death for most as “unknown.”

Of the 11 depredations reported, two were labeled as confirmed livestock depredations—one by the Lassen Pack on July 23 and the other on Aug. 18 by the Whaleback Pack in Siskiyou County. The majority of the “unknown” determinations occurred on private timberland in eastern Siskiyou County in Whaleback Pack territory. However, the carcasses were either too old or consumed to make a determination.

Two “probable” depredations were also attributable to the Whaleback Pack on June 30 and July 30. So far in 2023, CDFW has confirmed 19 livestock kills by gray wolves, 17 by the Whaleback Pack and two by the Lassen Pack.
