To address a growing budget shortfall, the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) and the State Board of Stock Inspection Commissioners are proposing increases to brand inspection fees this fall and the five-year brand assessment fee in January 2027.
These changes will go through a rulemaking process with input from stakeholders.
The Brand Division’s expenses have climbed from $6 million in fiscal year 2022 to a projected $7.6 million, with total costs expected to exceed revenue by $2.8 million by fiscal year 2026. Rising vehicle, personnel and operational costs are driving the deficit, according to the agency.
CDA plans to raise inspection fees by an average of 53% and assessment fees by 61% while also cutting operating expenses. The proposed fee increases can be viewed at tinyurl.com/2ra9pv86.
