California’s first solar-over-canal project, built over Turlock Irrigation District canals, is now complete, according to the Turlock Journal.
Project Nexus seeks to expand solar deployment over the state’s canal network. Construction began in February and finished in August, adding 1.6 megawatts of generation capacity to Turlock Irrigation District’s portfolio. Funded by the state and developed in collaboration with the University of California, Merced, and the Department of Water Resources, the research shows that canal solar can conserve water, reduce land use, and generate clean energy for approximately 2 million homes annually.
