California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed into law Assembly Bill 2436, which increases livestock inspection fees by 10 cents each.
Inspection fees for cattle moved out of state will increase to $1.60 per head (previously $1.50), cattle buyers will pay 80 cents per head (previously 70 cents) and carcass inspection fees will be $2.10 per carcass (previously $2).
Assemblymember Juan Alanis (R-Modesto) introduced the legislation as a result of rising costs for the California Bureau of Livestock Identification.
“With rising operating expenses, it’s imperative to adjust fees to ensure the Bureau can maintain crucial livestock inspection services that benefit our communities,” Alanis said at the time of the bill’s introduction earlier this year.
