The American Wildlife Habitat Conservation Act would increase the amount of money available in a pre-existing fund that funds state and Tribal wildlife conservation, habitat restoration and sportsmen education programs.
A total of 10% of the funds could be used for competitive grants for new wildlife projects at the state and local level. The bill would prohibit any of the federal dollars from being used on the reintroduction or management of a species in a manner not supported by the state.
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association said that in other words, this means: “None of these funds could go toward a species action that lacks local support—for example, the reintroduction of grizzlies to the North Cascades in Washington state.”
The bill has the support of the organization, which says the legislation will empower states and Tribes to follow the best available science and support management decisions that make the most sense.
