Bill to protect processors from EPA regs

Reps. Ron Estes (R-KS-04) and Eric Burlison (R-MO-07) have introduced legislation to prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from enforcing a new rule called “Clean Water Effluent Limitations Guidelines and Standards for the Meat and Poultry Products Point source category.”

The Banning EPA’s Encroachment of Facilities Act would prohibit finalizing, implementing or enforcing the rule that was signed on Dec. 13, 2023, to strengthen regulations on meat and poultry facility discharges.

The rule will expand regulations to include phosphorus discharge along with new standards for oil, organic material, salt, ammonia and nitrogen.
