The Biden administration has released the President’s Budget for the 2024 fiscal year.
“The president’s budget provides USDA with the tools needed to serve all Americans by providing effective, innovative science-based public policy leadership at home and around the world,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in a press release. “It contains critical investments that will help rural communities provide the fuel, food and fiber upon which our nation depends and will drive solutions that will lead to more market opportunities for producers.”
The budget would provide more funds to food programs, such as providing $32 billion for child nutrition programs, and $15 billion over 10 years to provide free school meals to an additional 9 million children.
The budget also includes over $5 billion in restoring national forests and mitigating wildfire risk, and $1.2 billion in USDA conservation programs.
In addition, the budget includes investing $240 million in new supply chains and markets for small and mid-sized farmers, and an additional $12 million in the Farm to School Program. The budget also includes $270 million for minority-serving institution programs.
