Believer Meats gets nod from USDA

The company’s first U.S. commercial-scale production facility is planned at 200,000 square feet, with possible expansion in the future.

Believer Meats

Believer Meats has received the USDA’s first-ever inspection grant for a large-scale cultivated meat facility, clearing the way for commercial production at its new 200,000-square-foot plant in Wilson County, NC, Food Safety News reported.

The Israeli-founded company, formerly known as Future Meat Technologies, had already received the Food and Drug Administration’s “no questions” letter in July. With USDA label approval, Believer Meats can now sell its cultivated chicken in the U.S. and abroad. CEO Gustavo Burger called it a major milestone. Using fibroblast cells from chicken eggs, the facility can produce up to 12,000 tons of cultivated chicken products annually—cementing its status as the world’s largest cultivated meat factory.
