Walmart was faced with a class action lawsuit that accused the grocery chain of improperly labeling meat products when reducing the price as they neared their expiration dates.
The company agreed to settle the lawsuit by paying a minimum of $4.5 million on a claims-made basis, up to $9.5 million. The complaint alleged Walmart incorrectly charged for weighted goods from February 2015 to present.
“Walmart advertised those weighted goods at specific unit sale prices, but upon closer inspection, the final sale prices did not coincide with the unit sale prices based on the weight of the products as represented on the original labels (the ‘Pricing Practice’),” according to the complaint. “As a result, Walmart consumers did not receive the promised value for the weighted goods they purchased.”
