The U.S. has agreed to lift its ban on British beef exports, creating a Ј66 million ($76.7 million) market for UK beef producers.
The two have agreed on standards of the UK’s disease control measures following an inspection period last summer.
Previously, the British Meat Processors Association and the North American Meat Institute signed a memo of understanding between the respective countries to work together in order to move towards a trade agreement.
Negotiations for a U.S.-UK free trade agreement are also expected to begin this month.
Beef was banned from the UK following the BSE outbreak. “It is great news that the U.S. has reopened the market to British beef,” said UK International Trade Secretary Liz Truss.
“This is a win for our farmers and I look forward to seeing high-quality British beef enjoyed on tables across the U.S. very soon.”
