Tyson Foods is investing $300 million into a case-ready beef and pork plant in Utah. The plant is expected to open as soon as 2021, and potential sites in the Salt Lake City area are under review at the moment.
The facility is expected to employ around 800 workers to start, possibly expanding into 1,200 positions in the first three years.
The plant will have a projected annual payroll of $44 million.
The facility will be a “meat-cutting and packaging operation that will take large cuts of beef and pork and convert them into steaks, chops, roasts and ground meat” to be sold in grocery stores.
“We’re excited about building a new food plant in Utah and appreciate the state’s support and the exceptional people we’ve met,” said Nate Hodne, senior vice president and general manager of case-ready meats for Tyson Fresh Meats.
“We believe Utah is a great location because of the availability of labor and property and the access to highways and rail.
Once built, the new facility will help us meet growing demand for case-ready meat in the Western U.S.” This will be Tyson’s fourth case-ready plant, with operations already in Texas, Iowa and Tennessee.
