USDA’s Economic Research Service has reported more cattle imported into the U.S. for the first half of 2019 as compared to 2018.
The latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook shows 14.2 percent more cattle imported compared to the previous year.
Of those imported, 63 percent came from Mexico and 37 percent from Canada.
The majority of cattle were animals from Mexico weighing 400-700 pounds.
Imports of this weight range increased more than 19 percent from 2018, likely from attractive U.S. feeder cattle prices.
Slaughter-ready cattle imports jumped 31.5 percent from last year, with 99.5 percent originating from Canada.
