Oklahoma City-based processor and supplier Lopez Foods has purchased a meat processing facility in Cherokee, IA.

The company paid $9.3 million for the Iowa Food Group Plant and plans to reopen the plant next spring after extensive renovations, including equipment acquisition, hiring a workforce and asbestos mitigation.

The 300,000-square-foot facility was purchased by Iowa Food Group in the fall of 2018, but only operated for six weeks before closing this past April.

The property had previously sat vacant since 2014, when Tyson Foods ceased utilizing the facility.

Lopez Foods is expected to make a formal announcement concerning the facility acquisition later this fall.
