Memphis Meats, a Berkley, CA-based startup, says it is one step closer to bringing cell-based meat to the market, according to an NPR report.
The company plans to build a pilot production facility with funds raised from donors such as Bill Gates, and even animal protein giants Cargill and Tyson Foods.
Memphis Meats reported $161 million in its latest round of funding.
“People thought this was all science fiction,” when the company was founded back in 2015, the co-founder and CEO of Memphis Meats, Uma Valeti, told NPR.
“Everything that we’ve done at Memphis Meats [has] started to show that this can be done,” Valeti said.
“This is real.” The processing plant is expected to be built in the next 18 to 24 months.
