Beef Bits Brief: JBS enters plant-based market

JBS is the latest of the large protein companies to enter the plant-based market.

The company will be welcoming Colorado-based Planterra Foods as a new subsidiary, which will have plant-based burgers and meatballs available in grocery stores under the OZO brand.

The products will be made with textured pea protein, wheat gluten, and a pea and rice protein fermented by the roots of Shiitake mushrooms.

The brand claims to be soy-free and have less saturated fat and fewer calories than rival products.

When asked about the spreading notion that plant-based meat is “ultra-processed” and packed with “unpronounceable ingredients” such as methyl cellulose, a representative from the brand told Food Navigator USA that the ingredient was natural, but the name did put people off so most brands are trying to remove it from its formulations.
