Impossible Foods has ceased trying to score McDonald’s as a customer for its plant-based products, citing lack of production capabilities.
The company told Reuters it is unable to produce enough of its imitation meat to keep up with the world’s No. 1 fast food chain.
Impossible Foods CEO Pat Brown told the news outlet, “It would be stupid for us to be vying for them right now … Having more big customers right now doesn’t do us any good until we scale up production.”
The company teamed up with Burger King last year to launch its soy-based Impossible Whopper.
Impossible Foods is now looking to double its production before making a deal with a company of McDonald’s size.
“I wish we had vastly more capacity than we do right now because the demand is high,” Brown said.
Last September, McDonald’s launched the PLT (plant-lettuce-tomato) burger in Canada, but has yet to roll out any plant-based burgers to the U.S.
