Competition continues to rise as more plant-based products enter the market. Plant-based hamburgers, meatballs, sausage… Now, one company has even taken to launching “the world’s first high protein, meat-free dog food.”

Wild Earth is a startup vegan pet food company that announced their new product line at North America’s largest pet industry event, SuperZoo Conference, in late August.

The pet food will be made of plant and fungi-based proteins instead of meat. The main ingredient in the food is yeast protein, which the company claims is a major source of dietary fiber that’s absent in animal meat and highly lacking in conventional dog foods.

“A common misconception is that dogs need animal meat in their diet, but what they truly need is protein,” said Wild Earth Chief Veterinary Officer Ernie Ward.

“And protein is readily available to dogs from a variety of plant and fungi-based sources.”

The company claims the new product is more environmentally friendly and “clean” compared to conventional pet food.
