Israel-based Aleph Farms, Ltd. will partner with Mitsubishi Corp. to bring lab-grown meat to Japan.
The two companies will work together to tailor the product to Japanese consumers’ tastes and then use Mitsubishi’s manufacturing capabilities to distribute the product.
Aleph’s Chief Executive Officer, Didier Toubia, declined to provide further details about the companies’ arrangement or plans to obtain regulatory approval in an interview with Bloomberg.
“The cooperation demonstrates Aleph Farms’ strategy of working together with the food and meat industries to ensure a successful integration of cultivated meat within the ecosystem, while maximizing the positive impact we make,” Toubia said in a released statement. “We are excited to bring cultivated meat production closer to the Japanese market.”
Mitsubishi had $15.6 billion in food sales in the last 12 months and wants to explore the potential of selling lab-grown meat as Toubia stated Japan would be “high on the list” to sell lab-grown beef.
