Family-run meat processing company Strauss Brands was acquired by private equity firm Insight Equity Holdings in August.
CEO and President Randy Strauss remained in his role, and plans for building a new facility began.
The new plant was expected to be relocated from Franklin, WI to the north side of Milwaukee, WI, in Century City, but those plans have been shut down.
Animal rights activists arrived at a Common Council Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee meeting to protest, and the council voted the proposal back for a third hearing.
After the meeting, Alderman Khalif Rainey, who represents the district the plant would move to, withdrew his support. He cited opposition from people living in Century City.
This led to the announcement on Oct. 21 that the plant would not be relocating to Milwaukee.
“We honor and respect the opinions of the community and don’t want to make our home in a place where our presence would not be seen as a benefit,” Strauss said in a statement.
“Therefore, we are no longer pursuing relocation to Century City.”
