Following a cattle depredation, a grizzly bear was euthanized on private land in Paradise Valley’s Tom Miner Basin in Montana.
The bear—a 20-year-old male—was captured on Aug. 10 by Wildlife Services and USDA officials, and it was determined the bear had previously been relocated due to livestock conflicts. The bear also had significant tooth decay.
Bears in that condition will sometimes prey on livestock as a food source, especially if they have a history of conflicts, the agency said.
Considering these factors, and in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks euthanized the bear on Aug. 11.
This is the third incident of grizzly bear removal in Montana’s portion of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
