Patsy Houghton of Mitchell County, KS, will be recognized March 5 as the 2020 Stockman of the Year.
The award will be presented at the annual Kansas Stockmen’s Dinner by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC).
Houghton graduated from Kansas State University in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in animal sciences and industry (ASI), and a master’s degree in reproductive physiology in 1979.
Upon graduation, she taught at California State University-Fresno for two years and served as a youth educator for the American Simmental Association for two years.
She then received her doctorate from Purdue University in 1986. Houghton started Heartland Cattle Co. near McCook, NE, in 1990, where she innovated the “professional heifer development” concept.
In addition, she served as co-chair of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Cattlemen’s College for 11 years, was named as K-State’s ASI Distinguished Alumnus in 2011, Purdue University’s College of Agriculture Distinguished Alumni Class of 2010, and Purdue’s Outstanding Animal Sciences Alumni Award.
“Patsy is truly remarkable and well known; a good stockperson who has provided tremendous service to LMIC and K-State,” the Stockman of the Year committee said.
