The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) confirmed anthrax in a steer in Briscoe County on Dec. 31, 2025, marking Texas’ first reported case of the disease in 2025.
The quarantined location is about five miles north of Silverton, TX, and carcass disposal is required before quarantine release. Although anthrax typically occurs in a region bounded by the towns of Uvalde, Ozona and Eagle Pass, prior cases were confirmed in Briscoe County in 2020 and 2023.
“Zoonotic diseases like anthrax pose a risk to both animal and human health,” said Bud Dinges, state veterinarian and TAHC executive director, urging vaccination, vigilance and immediate veterinary consultation if exposure is suspected.
