The Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) has confirmed about 4,000 head of feeder cattle were killed in severe flooding that took place at the end of May in the Texas Panhandle.

During the Memorial Day weekend, near Hereford, TX, heavy rains resulted in flash flooding near some feedlots. One feedyard near a river suffered the majority of losses, although they were seen across several feedyards in the area.

Ben Weinheimer, president and CEO of TCFA, told DTN that cattle killed were at various stages of the feeding process. In the early stages of reporting, some news reports detailed losses of nearly 25,000 head, to which Weinheimer expressed his frustration to DTN.

“Trying to grab readers’ attention and speak to the possibilities of the scale of some disaster, and doing that in a premature manner, can lead to some fabricated numbers,” he said.
