Walmart has opened its first meat processing plant in the southwestern part of Georgia in Thomasville.
The facility has hired 200 workers so far, and is expected to hire another 150 when the plant is in full swing.
Cattle processed at the plant will be raised and slaughtered in another state. Shelley Zorn, Thomasville Payroll Development Authority executive director, told the Thomasville Times-Enterprise, “What they’re doing here is cutting and packing, and it’s clean.”
Walmart is currently creating a supply chain for Black Angus beef in order to meet customers’ requests for more transparency about the source of the company’s meat. The Thomasville facility is a $90 million investment.
