Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) officials have confirmed the discovery of the country’s 17th domestic case of BSE in a six-year-old cow from Alberta. The animal was discovered as part of Canada’s enhanced surveillance system and did not enter the food chain. The animal is now the 11th case found which was born after the country’s ruminant animal food ban was put in place, prompting concern among some U.S. cattle groups that the feed ban has not been effective. However, CFIA has always said that the discovery of occasional BSE cases is to be expected, as the country works to eradicate the disease from the herd.
