Keystone Pipeline delayed indefinitely

Once again, the Obama administration took the postpone plan on a final decision for the Keystone XL pipeline, creating more frustration on both sides of the controversial topic. The postponement was announced April 18, and extends the key review period—indefinitely.

Comment period for Brazilian imports closes

Earlier this year, the United States Department of Agriculture Animal (USDA) and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) issued a proposed federal rule that would allow Brazil to export to the United States fresh and frozen beef from specific regions in Brazil.

EB-5 program scrutinized in plant closing

The once defunct Northern Beef Packers plant, in Aberdeen, SD, has new owners, and a new name, no doubt with hopes of the past controversies being laid to rest. The plant was recently purchased by San Francisco-based White Oak Financial Advisors and is now New Angus, LLC.

Livestock disaster aid sign-up begins

Producers who lost livestock or crops in the 2012 drought or the 2013 blizzards are eligible for some relief with the 2014 farm bill Livestock Forage Program (LFP) and Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) that are now permanent packages and include retroactive payments for eligible losses back to Oct.

Lesser prairie-chicken listed as threatened

USFWS announced the final listing of the species as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The agency did however add a final special rule that will limit regulatory impacts on landowners and businesses from the listing. Under the law, a “threatened” listing means the species is likely to become in danger of ex tinction.

BPI wins first victory with judge‚s ruling on LFTB

Beef Products Inc. filed a lawsuit against ABC in September of 2012 seeking $1.2 billion in damages. The South Dakota company says the television network’s coverage led to the closure of three plants and roughly 700 layoffs by misleading consumers into believing the product is unsafe.
