El Nino weather pattern improves 2014 hay outlook

Historically high prices in the hay markets are expected to continue for the fourth year in a row, with tight supplies and continued drought in parts of the U.S. But there is some hope that the expected El Niņo weather pattern may offer some relief on the production end, and may return hay prices closer to a normal range.

Conserving sensitive land with CRP

CRP is a land conservation program administered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). In exchange for a yearly rental payment, farmers enrolled in the program agree to remove environmentally-sensitive land from agricultural production and plant species that will improve environmental health and quality.

Two Oregon counties vote to ban GM crops

Voters in Oregon’s Josephine County passed Measure 17-58 by a slightly narrower margin, 58 percent to 42 percent. This one is expected to end up with a court date because the state passed a law in October 2013 limiting counties’ rights to ban GMOs.

U.S. beef export outlook optimistic

USMEF President and CEO Philip Seng said beef exports were up 11 percent in volume and 9 percent in value during the first quarter. “One of the key markets we’re enjoying at the moment is the Mexican market. The Japanese market is also performing quite well for us—we’re up about 20 percent in the first quarter,” he said.
