Exports reflect economic climate

Despite the prolonged slowdown in global economic activity and the initial wave of A-H1N1 Influenzarelated market reactions, exports of U.S. pork and beef held up reasonably well in the month of April. While pork plus pork variety meat exports declined by 10 percent in volume compared to April 2008, the drop in value was limited to about 4 percent.

California bill to limit antibiotics fails

Some reprieve was granted to California livestock producers when legislation that would have limited the use of antibiotics by licensed veterinarians to prevent and control disease in animal agriculture was defeated by the California Senate, June 3, with 15 senators voting in favor of the bill and 20 voting to oppose Senate Bill 416.

Environmental groups renew lawsuit over wolf delisting

The Defenders of Wildlife, Earth Justice, and several other conservation groups have filed to have gray wolves in Idaho and Montana relisted for federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. This comes in the wake of the May 4 federal decision to remove protection for wolves in those two states.

Russian officials said last week that they have no intention of moving more quickly to resume meat trade with the U.S. According to a Reuters report, Russian officials claim they have not yet received sufficient data to resume trade. Unfortunately, the American side has not yet provided sufficient data, Sergei Dankvert, head of Rosselkhoznadzor, Russias food safety agency, was quoted as saying.
