A troubling event occurred this past week at an auction barn. There was a feeling of ?not wanting,? but also a feeling of ?that is the way it is.? The auction barn is known as a social center and a place to sell cattle. People share stories and experiences that go along with an industry that is speckled with considerable individualism.

Cows should not be giftwrapped. Very few questions are ever asked by those planning to purchase replacement cows. Not even simple questions, such as are the cows vaccinated or what vaccinations have the cows received? The history of a cow is perhaps more important than the wrapping.

Colostrum intake is critical for the newborn calf, says Greg Lardy, a North Dakota State University Extension Service beef cattle specialist. ?At birth, a calf?s immune system is not fully developed,? he says. ?The calf must rely on colostrum from the cow until its own immune system is totally functional (about 1 to 2 months of age).
