Fed cattle steady, boxed beef higher

Cash trade in the fed cattle markets last Thursday remained slow, although some business had been completed in Colorado at $83.50, steady to 50 cents higher than the previous week. Nebraska and Corn Belt dressed trade was also underway at mostly steady prices despite light to moderate demand from packer buyers.

Last week, the final rule was published for mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (COOL); the deed is done and packers are required to label product. Proponents of COOL won the war. Price differentials have been discovered with Canadian and Mexican cattle.

Washington state Rep. Steve Hailey, R-Mesa, died Dec. 25, about a year after he was diagnosed with colon cancer. A farmer and rancher from the Franklin County town of Mesa, WA, Hailey was elected on his second try in 2006, narrowly beating fellow Republican Joe Schmick in the Republican primary.

Portable test will identify tuberculosis and FMD

A portable test being developed by biodetection expert Stratophase could soon enable farmers and vets to accurately detect highly contagious diseases such as bovine tuberculosis (TB) and foot and mouth (FMD) in the field, reducing false alarms and containment time and enabling remedial action to be taken more quickly.
