THIRD DAIRY BUYOUT SCHEDULED

by WLJ

Cooperatives Working Together announced today they would start accepting bids this month for a third dairy herd retirement. The program is working to remove cows from production in an effort to prop up sagging prices for dairy products due to a sharp decline in demand. The program will send cattle to slaughter in November and December at a time when cow beef prices are seasonally lower, adding downward price pressure. Sources said the expect the cull to remove between 70,000 and 80,000 cows from the herd, similar numbers to those retired during the last round.
